Riverside Sunderland has received the 'Best Future Place' award at the 2022 Pineapple Awards which recognise exceptional placemaking.
Designed for Sunderland City Council and their development partner Igloo Regeneration, the masterplan will reinvent the heart of the city whilst drawing on its industrial heritage to create a new, vibrant 21st century urban quarter. The judges highlighted the scheme’s innovation and focus on sustainability.
Councillor Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: "Awards like this are important...because they demonstrate that - on a national stage - our vision stands out and I think that’s a sign of just how ambitious we are in Sunderland and just how hard we’re working to deliver something really special.”
Proctor & Matthews are also masterplanners and architects for Vaux, the first of four proposed urban quarters within the masterplan. Vaux will provide 91 houses and 41 apartments and has been designed to quickly establish the essential character and quality of Riverside Sunderland as a place to live; laying the foundations for a brand new city centre community that others will want to join, and stimulating demand for the adjacent neighbourhoods set to grow up around it.
