Proctor and Matthews Architects have been shortlisted in two categories in the 2014 Surface Design Awards.
The Surface Design Awards were established in 2012. Championing the best in progressive design, and the global use of innovative surfacing, they are believed to be the only awards to focus exclusively on surface design. The awards will be presented during the Surface Design Show in London in February 2014, and will be judged by a panel chaired by architect Will Alsop.
Abode at Great Kneighton has been shortlisted in the Housing Exterior Surface category. This project uses a number of different surfaces including perforated brickwork, black weatherboarding and perforated metal sheet cladding to add character and identity within its hierarchy of marker buildings, terraces and individual houses.
UCH2 is a new building for the University of Brighton in Hastings, and uses a series of perforated steel ventilation panels, each skilfully designed and fabricated to show an element of the Bayeux Tapestry. As well as providing a striking visual effect, these panels also serve a practical purpose in hiding window openers from view and admitting fresh air into the building. A textured brickwork pavilion lends further character to the building's lower levels. UCH2 has been shortlisted in the Public Building Exterior Surface category.
