Proctor & Matthews Architects have completed Kendal Vision – Opportunity Sites, a strategic study exploring how housing-led, walkable town-centre development could help historic market towns respond to demographic change and support local economies.
Commissioned by Kendal Futures, a public-private partnership, and funded by Westmorland & Furness Council and Kendal Town Council, the study builds on the community-led Kendal Vision (2020). It identifies a series of town-centre brownfield “Opportunity Sites” to test potential capacity and development principles, exploring how over 900 homes and supporting town-centre uses could be accommodated while informing future Local Plan housing and site-allocation discussions.
The work considers how higher-density, compact, predominantly own-door housing typologies could be integrated within Kendal’s historic urban grain, while acknowledging constraints including flood risk, land ownership and infrastructure.
