Stephen Proctor was invited to speak at the Scottish Government event which focused on the future of housing across the country and showcased inspiring approaches to housing delivery at a range of scales. An opening address from Kevin Stewart, Minister for Local Government and Housing, was followed by a series of speakers and panel discussions outlining strategic, city-level and small-scale approaches to diversifying the delivery of homes across Scotland.
Stephen presented the studio’s proposals for the extension of the existing neighbourhood of Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders, providing new homes, workspace and community facilities following the arrival of the Borders Railway. The masterplan seeks to preserve the sensitive historic and natural setting by retaining the existing landscape where possible. The housing is arranged in ‘clusters‘ - defined and distinctive residential neighbourhoods built on the site of young tree plantations surrounded and sheltered by retained and reinforced deciduous tree belts. Each ‘cluster‘ has a proposed small area of flexible space (community, local retail, studio/workshops) at its centre to foster a mixed use character to the development helping to establish a strong identity and sense of place.
