Hargood Close has won a Best Housing Development award at the 2013 Brick Awards. The awards are given annually by the Brick Development Association to recognise the best use of brick as a building material in the UK and around the world.
The judges described the scheme as a clever piece of urban infill, and a successful solution creating an oasis for homeless families and individuals to enable them to gain respite.
The citation for Hargood close describes how the brick and detailing has been used creatively to produce a range of contoured and interesting facades. The development has a range of additional services including accommodation, but avoids having an institutional character. The detailing adds interest but still produces a rewarding facade within the cost constraints of social investment. The scheme succeeds in both having a front elevation that adds quality to an otherwise uninspiring road and area, but yet protects the community and gives a sense of place to the users.
