We have been granted planning permission for two holiday cottages on the Isle of Benbecula, in the Outer Hebrides. The design is inspired by early Blackhouse forms and the surrounding dramatic coastal landscape.
The houses are bounded by a gabion stone wall a reference to the traditional early Croft Houses which are scattered throughout the surrounding landscape. The wall creates deep window reveals accented with painted linings, to frame views out to the Benbencula. The window reveals add character to the otherwise simple cottages and direct the sunlight deeper into the rooms. A rainwater gutter (located above the reveals) collects water and discharges to the soakaway via rainwater chains.
The cottages and bicycle stores are clad in black corrugated metal sheeting referencing the historic and contemporary corrugated metal buildings of Benbecula and the Outer Hebrides.
