We are delighted that Abode at Great Kneighton has been named the Supreme Winner at the 2014 Housing Design Awards.
Commenting on the award, the judges said: 'It won the Supreme Award - the winner of winners - because it was by some distance the most inventive development in England today'
The Housing Design Awards recognised the best of housing design in the UK, and are judged annually by an expert panel. This Award is the latest in a series of Housing Design Awards presented to Proctor and Matthews: Horsted Park was a winner in the 2014 completed schemes category, while our Hargood Close supported housing scheme in Colchester won the 2013 Richard Feilden Award for best social housing scheme.
Abode at Great Kneighton is a major new housing development for Countryside Properties, and forms part of a new community taking shape on the southern fringe of Cambridge. Our scheme consists of over 300 homes arranged as a sequence of spaces and housing types, responding to the existing geography and infrastructure of the site and providing a rich variety of typologies and tenure.
A short film was produced by the Housing Design Awards organisers, featuring contributions from Stephen Proctor and Andrew Matthews, Countryside Properties, Cambridge City Council and residents. The film can be seen here.
In addition to the Surpreme Award, Abode at Great Kneighton also received the Graham Pye Award for the best plan form. Stewart Baseley, Executive Chairman of the Home Builders Federation said: When the owners tell you about the pleasure they derive from daylight, like they do at Abode, they are explaining the benefit of the plan form. There are several great ones at Great Kneighton but the 'long house', the broad-fronted shallow house with the a long east flank wall for the morning sun and west one for the sunset is the very best you can get."
